Passion, opinion, writing

Okayyyyy... brace yourself, 'cause this sound like it's gonna be one of those ranting type of posts again.

At the very least, stick around for some extras at the end. We got porn, yayy :V

You know, as I continued to surf my way through the interweb, day by day, a certain problem of mine then began to make itself apparent...

I realized that I lacked the ability to - as what the good ol education syllabus here try to teach - think critically and creatively.

What does this exactly mean? Well, to put it in a simple word: I can't give a critical assessment, review, criticism... that sort of thing.

Now if you've been sticking with me (scratch that... if you could read my thoughts) you'll find out that I somehow like to take myself seriously, thinking of those little details. So am I overreacting here? I mean, to give a simple example that everyone could relate... let's say we are discussing about K-ON! (which I incidentally JUST finished watching, slowpoke me :V), and then you'd get these two sides that either love it or hate it, right? And then someone would go on to say why it's a good series, while the other would shoot those points to the ground, right?

As for me? Well, I'll be the silent observer I am, just taking in whatever both side says, without having any say in it.

So what's exactly the problem here? Could it be that I'm just too reserved to give any opinion? Or is it because I lack a certain analytical skill - is it an inherent property of mine? Or is it simply because I haven't had enough input, hence I can't give an optimum output?

And from that last point, I then thought, hey, maybe it's because I lack passion.

Why do I mention about passion? Well, while I might have exaggerated a bit on the part that I can't analyze things, I find it somewhat hard to express a critical view on things that I like: anime, music, related otaku phenomena... I mean, sure, I could just go on and say, 'this series sucks', or 'that guy singing sucks', but that does sound that it lacked depth...

I also find it somewhat hard to really write my points across. I mean, look, even this post doesn't really quantify as a detailed analysis of my current problem of the lack of analyzing...

Damn, maybe I'm just thinking too much about this.

What do you guys think, writing all those comments on your favourite figurines, that anime you just watched, the games that you just played - were you in a phase where you just took them as it is, without really analyzing bits and pieces of them? Would those kind of thing come with continued pursuit of the activities, and by mingling with like minded people? Should I just take it easy, enjoy what I do, and just mix with all them cool people?

If you've been reading to this point, I thank you for putting up with the emo-ing nature of this post. Man, internet sure make things a lot easier...

As promised: here, have some porn (close, but not really!)

Ah~n

Write it easy, everyone!

  1. Personally, I'm the same as you when it comes with K-ON. I enjoyed watching it, but I didn't love or hate it.

In my case, it is a lack of passion. I remember when I played FF13 and FF14. I was expecting so much from them, yet they were so crappy. While I didn't go about writing a review, I had so many thoughts on why they were bad games.

I usually try to analyze the figures I want to buy in depth to help with my decision, but I am guilty of making some impulse purchases without fully checking it out. I'm sure it happens to everyone and I at least make the effort to ensure I don't buy anything too pricey on impulse.

I would advise you to just take it easy. Hobbies are hobbies because you enjoy them. If you happen to come across something that triggers a flame in your heart then that's even better.

Nah, that's pretty alright. Sometimes I feel like reading short, concise opinions over long, detailed ones. It makes for a nice change.

Besides, I'm not a very good reviewer myself. I feel exactly like you do about everything. I just pretend I'm talking to myself whenever the task of reviewing something is at hand; commentary, more than anything else.

From this post alone I can tell you have a clear and concise writing style. It's not easy to get points across, particularly on the internet. Keep flexing your writin' hand and you'll improve with time. But honestly, don't worry about it too much anyway. As Cpt. Awesome said, take it easy and remember that hobbies are yours because you enjoy them!

Do you know what a positive aspect of doing that is? Avoiding arguments and shitstorms! I wish I could be like that most of the time. I can't help but react..

    >were you in a phase where you just took them as it is, without really analyzing bits and pieces of them?

I'd like to say no. I have personally analyzed the fuck out of K-On, for example, and will firmly profess how good it is. Whether or not it's worth arguing depends on who you're talking with.

  4. I try to think things through properly, but sometimes it seems a lot better to just stop worrying and love the bomb.

Sometimes critical thinking can be paralyzing, but it's important to be able to continue moving forwards.

  5. Thanks for the replying to this rambling sort-of posts guys. I guess in the end it's just a case of me not taking it easy enough haha.

I have something to say about this hobby of mine tho (watching anime and related otaku stuff) - there was a time when real life caught up, and I practically abandoned it. Then, while thinking of how I'm spending my times in uni, I thought, damn don't tell me it's all just exams and test...!

So yeah, I've just started to slowly get back to this hobby. And it feels good, man... feels good.

    Anyway...

    Thanks man.

    Cheers guys.

  6. Sometimes you just see the valid points of both arguments and just keep a middle ground. That's fine, I do that too with some things. Perhaps you're just more of a passive observer.

    >I also find it somewhat hard to really write my points across.

Nah, it was fairly clear to me. Don't be too conscious about it. You're doing just fine.

Yeah, I find myself to be somewhat like that; it'd take a while for me to pick one side, if I do at all. Maybe I'm more of a passive observer after all.

    Thanks for dropping by!
