My exposure to the work of Mucha goes a pretty long way, albeit an  indirect one: I had came across countless works that were in no doubt indebted to his work for many, many years... yet I had not known of the art movement that affected the sensibilities of the artists, much less the man associated with the movement!

Faults' Artists Highlight: Hiroaki Samura

Welcome to Faults' Artists Highlight, where I write about artists or works whom I took influence from, the ones which I admire, or artists whose works which I found fascinating. In the series, I will be writing about my experience with the highlighted artists, attempting to identify aspects of their works that resonated with me.

As is the case with most people, my entry point into the work of Hiroaki Samura is through what is widely considered his magnum opus, the almost 20 year long running Blade of the Immortal series. I had joined in the series quite late - a bit past when the series was to be halfway of its total run - and the exact moment I first came across his name was not from finding out about the series itself per se, but rather having read an interview with an artist that namedrop Samura as well as Terada as one of his influences.

Faults' Artists Highlight: Katsuya Terada

Welcome to Faults' Artists Highlight, where I write about artists or works whom I took influence from, the ones which I admire, or artists whose works which I found fascinating. In the series, I will be writing about my experience with the highlighted artists, attempting to identify aspects of their works that resonated with me.

In the early 2000s, there was a local artist in a local comic magazine with a decidedly different art style that had caught my eyes. Granted, it was not a style that I was interested in (not to mention the rather murky and sparse storytelling...), but it was a decidedly different take from other more conventional manga art style that was all the rage back then...

It wasn't until some time later where in one interview with an entirely different artist where one name was cited as an influence, and it was from the illustration work for a certain anime movie where I had my first encounter with the artist that made me go, ah, I can see the influence of this artist on the work that other artist earlier...

Such was how I was initially introduced to the work of Katsuya Terada.

Faults' Artists Highlight: Yoshitoshi Abe

Welcome to Faults' Artists Highlight, where I write about artists or works whom I took influence from, the ones which I admire, or artists whose works which I found fascinating. I will be writing about my experience with said artists, and attempt a deeper look into what was it about aspect of their works that had resonated with me. 


Like so many other people growing up in the late 90s and early 2000s, I have been exposed to the influx anime/manga/Japanese art during a time when I had decided to dabble with drawing. While I initially started aping the popular shounen style art during that time, I did not particularly have any artist that I strongly ripped off based off from.

I wasn't thinking in such depth during that time, but looking back at it now, I would say that although I was very much attracted to the stylized style brought about by the anime/manga art during that time, I yearned for something darker, something more atmospheric and mysterious...

Oh hey, procrastinatin
